Three Hospitals. One Ride. One Incredible Effort.
A team of determined cyclists have completed an epic 100-mile challenge between Devon's three acute hospitals, raising almost £2,000 for local NHS charities.
The "Three Hospitals. One Ride." challenge saw Simon Clarke, Christopher Spencer and Steve Clarke set off from Derriford Hospital in Plymouth before cycling to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and then on to Torbay Hospital, eventually returning to Derriford to complete the demanding route.
Simon, who works on the One Devon Electronic Patient Record Programme across all three NHS trusts, said:
"As I approached my 40th birthday, I wanted to do something that pushed me out of my comfort zone and make a difference at the same time. The route between the three hospitals seemed the perfect way to celebrate the collaboration happening across Devon's NHS and raise money for the charities that support patients, families and staff every single day."
The trio faced steep climbs, long stretches of open road and plenty of sore legs along the way, but the support they received kept them going!
The challenge also highlighted the strong partnership between Devon's three NHS charities. Throughout the day, teams from Plymouth Hospitals Charity, the Royal Devon Hospitals Charity and Torbay and South Devon NHS Charity worked closely together, sharing updates, photographs and messages of support as the cyclists made their way across the county.
The collaborative approach meant supporters could follow the journey almost in real time, with each charity helping to tell the story as the riders reached each of the three hospitals.
Corinne Smith, Head of Charity at Plymouth Hospitals Charity, said:
"When Simon approached us with the idea, we immediately knew it was something we wanted to support. It perfectly reflected the collaboration taking place across One Devon and gave the three NHS charities a chance to work together on a shared fundraising initiative. It was fantastic to see colleagues across all three organisations supporting the riders throughout the day."
Simon, Christopher and Steve have so far raised around £2,000, with the money being shared between the three charities to support projects that enhance patient care, improve hospital environments and support the wellbeing of staff and families. Every mile pedalled and every pound raised will help make a lasting difference to communities across Devon.
